Applicants must generally be Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand Special Category visa holders, meet the applicable residence requirement, be of good character and intend to live in Australia or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia.
Under the general residence requirement, you must usually have lived in Australia on a valid visa for the four years immediately before applying and held a permanent visa or eligible Special Category visa for the final 12 months. You must generally not have been absent for more than 12 months in total during the four-year period, including no more than 90 days in the final 12 months. Exemptions and special residence rules may apply in limited circumstances.
Most citizenship by conferral applicants within the applicable age group must sit the citizenship test. The test contains 20 multiple-choice questions. To pass, you must achieve at least 75 percent overall and answer all five Australian values questions correctly. Different arrangements or exemptions may apply depending on the applicant’s age or circumstances.
You may be eligible if you were born outside Australia and at least one of your parents was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth. If that parent obtained citizenship by descent or through certain overseas adoption arrangements, additional Australian residence requirements may apply to the parent.
